Alpine Training Centre SCIO

Who are we?

• Alpine Training Centre SCIO (ATC) is a registered children’s charity.

What we do:

  • Provide more access to ski racing for young skiers.

  • Support young ski racers aged 10 to 16 with training camps and bursaries.

  • Support Scottish ski racing clubs by organising ski camps and races, and by providing bursaries to

upgrade race training for selected club juniors.

  • Offer instructor / coach qualifications to junior ski racers as part of their pathway in skiing.

Why we do it:

  • We love skiing and want to share our passion for the sport. We know that a childhood that involves skiing and ski racing brings lifelong benefits, with a variety of skills learned that will have a lasting impact on young people and how they live their lives.

  • In providing race-training bursaries for talented kids who can’t afford a ski camp, ATC’s aim is to enhance the accessibility of ski racing to as many promising young athletes as possible.

We also want to see ski racing flourish in Scotland. It takes a lot of practice to be competitive and achieve selection to the national teams – ATC delivers extra training camps at cost prices.

The benefits of training with ATC:

  • LEGACY. We are proud to say that an incredible 50% of the 46 kids on the current Scottish Alpine Ski Team are ATC alumni. And from the eight kids on our first-ever ATC camp, five have gone on to become certified ski instructors and coaches.

  • HEALTH. We are more aware than ever of the physical benefits of exercising in the outdoors and our ski camps make the most of every single moment in the open air, from race training on the mountain to yoga stretches on the deck.

  • WELLBEING. We pay particular attention to mental and emotional health and this is more important than ever due to the pandemic. A young racer on an ATC camp is part of a team and is embraced within its support network. They are given goals to work towards and through the process, self-confidence grows as they find motivation, make friends and carve out an identity within their favourite sport.

  • ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS. Training in wild mountain landscapes enhances kids’ appreciation of their surroundings and makes them more aware of issues around the conservation and protection of these precious resources.

How do we operate?

  • ATC runs between 12 and 18 weeks of ski camps in Scotland and the Alps per year.

  • We expect at least 12 fee-paying kids to attend each camp, at a set price per camp to cover fixed costs,

such as coaches, accommodation, food and so on. The price per camp varies depending on location, time

of year, and the number of fee-paying kids.

  • Any surplus generated is ploughed back into subsidising future ski camps, to make the ATC race training

    experience more affordable for all.

  • We also aim to award up to six bursaries per camp, so that kids can attend free of charge. These awardsare needs based, and will be facilitated by donations to the ATC charity bursaries, and other donations and grant awards. Bursaries are not from camp fees.

ATC seeks...

  • Eight dedicated individuals to become ATC Patrons. Patrons will commit to support the charity for three years with a minimum of £8,000 per year. This £24,000 commitment, if eligible for gift aid at 20%, would total £30,000 over the three years.

  • Individual donations to our bursary programme.

  • Sponsorship in the form of cash donations or agreements to supply equipment and ski gear.

Why support ATC the charity?

  • To give something back to a sport you love.

  • To help young racers fulfill their promise.

  • To give a generation of kids the chance to acquire life skills through ski racing.

  • To be part of the evolution of Scottish skiing.
